The holiday is here.

It arrives like a brick thrown through my office window. Sometimes I duck. Sometimes it hits me in the head.

So much going on in the months ahead that I'm excited about: working on an audio spoken word piece for Daylight Books for the forthcoming book "The Photographs Not Taken", curated by Will Steacy. Then there is a photography/design neutron bomb being cooked up by Kate Osba at This Is The What. Of course we don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but we want to get you all curious.

Yes, print lives....at times. And sometimes better than ever.

A Hole And A Wall

Let me show you what I'm working on.

It's a hole and a wall.

The deeper we dig the hole, the taller the wall will be.

And then this picture keeps surfacing over and over again in my sub-conscious. I found my son's pencil in my office after the homework kicked in.

Q: Can you explain what you are trying to do?

A: Oh, easy. I'm trying to land the Space Shuttle. But the wheels have fallen off. And one of the wings has a crack in it. And then the fuel is leaking out too.

Q: Do you think this is going to work?

A: Yup.

Q: It's breathtaking isn't it?
A: Yes...just totally beautiful. But...I don't smell the nature...I don't hear the nature either...but it looks almost the same.
Q: Can't you be happy with this? You must admit it's pretty close. We tried our best.
A: It is close. I can try...

Q: Here's my new system.

A: Oh..weird. I don't think it's going to work.

Q: What's the problem?

A: It's got this appendage on it...it doesn't look like anything like what I was expecting.

Q:  I know what you mean. But I think its got everything I need.

Q: So what exactly is a "Psychotherapy Photograph"?

A: Um...have you ever gone to see a shrink?

Q: Never.

A: Oh...well, you go to this person, a doctor, and talk. He doesn't really tell you anything, but he asks you questions, poses scenarios to you, and eventually you start getting answers to some of the things on your mind. Sometimes you role play, sometimes you take the stance of other people in your life...it kind of works.

Q: So what does this have to do with photography?

A: Well, I'm trying to like...emulate that experience with photographs and words. Little passages, like little Zen Koans...you know....stuff that makes you think. Like "The Gateless Gate", stuff like that. "When the student is ready, the teacher appears"...you know, that type of thing.

Q: So are you the teacher or the student?

A: Neither. I'm the reporter. I just report the facts.

Q: Beautiful, huh?

A: Wow, it is.

Q: I wish it would stay just like that. Like I'd love to come back every year and have it right there, perfectly formed like that. How long will it last?

A: Oh, not long. It'll morph into something kinda like that, but rougher. Then it'll melt, get muddy, you'll see the rocky part underneath. When the sun comes out, it'll be gone. m

Q: So, what are you trying to say here?

A: Well, nothing. It's just a chance to hear myself give words to the stuff. Sometimes it doesn't seem real until you start to say it, give words to it, and start to look at it all.

Q: Right. That's a start. Then what?

A: Well...I hope...the answers will then bubble to the surface.

Q: So, how do you put one foot in front of the other?

A:What you don't understand is that these structures I had built over the years...these things have been made by master craftsmen. The complex engineering and retrofitting they implement have been designed by internationally known architects. People stand back in awe when they view them. Nothing shakes them, these things are in place and they work every time.

Q: You know you are kidding yourself, right?

A: Oh, totally.

Q: Are you trying to study that thing or burn it?

A: Burn it.

Q: Oh. That's cool. But you know you aren't supposed to look right at the bright spot, right?

A: I know...I know.

Q: So when you go home, what do you think you are gonna find?
A: All the answers! And all the stuff I left there too.

Q: I don't think you are getting it. This is your life and it's like a number line. It's not something that starts and stops, and then reset itself and starts again anew. It's a continuum. All this stuff is connected.

A: Yah, I understand. But who says? Like...who set up these rules?

Q: Oh, easy. These are the laws of nature.

Q: Do you think you will be able to get this?

A: Yeah, yeah....totally. I'm not getting it yet, but I'm on the path to getting it. The idea is to give out what you take in. You'll never see me give the finger to the camera...you really never will.

Aberforth: Did he now? Nice job, I hope? Pleasant? Easy? Sort of thing you'd expect an unqualified kid to be able to do without overstretching themselves? Did he leave you the tools to do this job?
Harry: I — it's not easy, no. But I've got to —
Aberforth: Got to? Why got to? Let it go, boy, before you follow him. Save yourself, don't do what someone tells you to do. Look around...try to enjoy life. You're not here for long.
